Blinding Lights
Blinding lights is not a Christian song. It is not intended to have Christian themes. It does, however make strong connections to the human experience and those ties can be used to gain an understanding of God’s word.
If you watched my review video on this song, then you hopefully remember the idea that the lights potentially have a deeper meaning. This meaning can be different for everyone but does it not stem from sin and the devil?
Satan will use all he can to blind us, to turn us away from God. Satan wants our vision to be impaired, he wants us to not see clearly.
Let’s look at the chorus of blinding lights
I said, ooh, I'm blinded by the lights
No, I can't sleep until I feel your touch
I said, ooh, I'm drowning in the night
Oh, when I'm like this, you're the one I trust
There are a couple of ways for us to look at this. The first being that Satan is the lights and the night while God is the one we need to sleep and the one we trust. The second is that Satan is the lights and the night but also the one we are drawn to, the one we see as the release and the one we trust.
The first case is more straightforward, a classic clash of good and evil. One that we know the victor and can rejoice in that.
The second case is more real.
We get caught up in this life and we have set goals that are all about us, they are all selfish. Those are the things we feel like we need but then we get distracted by obstacles to get to them. Weather it is a lack of money to get them or a lack of time to enjoy them. Something gets in our way and we think of those as the bad guy. The problem is our desires are not any better.
We look at Ephesians 4 specifically verses 1-3 and 22-24
I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.
We know we are called to live for Christ but it is so easy to get caught up in this temporary world. Satan has power, He is not dumb. He does not try to win by pulling you away from God, but pulling you away from your other sin. Leading you to want to run from sin in order to return to a life for Satan and keeping God out of our minds completely.
The good news is the battle is already over. As much as the devil tries to deny it there is a place for us. Jesus has done the work that we cannot and knowing that joy is what brings us back to the desire to live a life for God.
