According to Merriam Webster Dictionary, the definition of a waymaker is:
1: one that makes a road
specifically : an English royal official of the 16th and early 17th centuries with the duty of keeping the highways in good repair
Have you ever watched someone repair a broken road? It’s a tedious job even with today’s technologies. Depending on how damaged the road is, they may have to tear up the road, repack the dirt to max density, pour the new concrete or asphalt, smooth it out, gravel out the edges, and then repaint the road for everyone’s safety. It definitely is not a one-person job. In fact, a company may even hire people to reroute traffic or manage it with a pilot car.
With that image in mind, when we look at the song “Way Maker” by Sinach we get a picture of the Holy Spirit working in our midst – moving people and interactions around for God’s glory. He is repairing the damage our sin does to the road as we attempt to flee from God’s presence.
By our own nature we do not walk a path towards God. We run in the opposite direction. We make ourselves into idols, we worship our talents and abilities, we seek honor and glory. All of our sins turn us away from God.
But that tug of our heart that stops us in our tracks – that turns us back to God – is the work of the Holy Spirit pointing us back to God.
John 14:26 But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.
Galatians 5:16 So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.
But even if the Holy Spirit tugs at your heart or someone fixes a broken road – if you don’t get back on the road and keep going, where will you end up? Following God isn’t just about walking in a way that looks like a servant from the outside, it is a far deeper calling that requires trusting God in all aspects of your life. It is stepping out on the road even when it is narrow and no one else wants to travel in that direction. It is focusing on the waymaker instead of the traffic that seems to be going in the opposite direction.
What is God calling you to? Where have you been ignoring His path?
Give your stubborn heart to Him, so that He can turn your pothole into another step on your faith journey.
