Light In The Darkness

If you saw my video on Way Maker then you know my thoughts on it. Those thoughts do not mean it cannot be used as a starting point for a devotion.

Let’s take a fresh look at the chorus:

Way maker
Miracle worker
Promise keeper
Light in the darkness
My God
That is who you are

I want to look specifically at the line Light in the Darkness. In the video I linked this to John 8:12

                 Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

When we connect with this verse we see that there is more to it than simply a statement of who Jesus is. It is an indirect call to follow him. And that is something we need to get out of the song as a whole. Worshiping Jesus is only part of the joyful life we get to live.

                “But wait, my life isn’t joyful right now,” I here you say, “How can anyone be joyful after this last year”

What is there not to be joyful for!? You are here in this temporary place for a purpose. There is a plan for you. It may not be easy to see or decipher but there is a plan given to you by the same person that has given you the gift of eternal joy.

It’s not enough that he went through brutal torture and was killed in one of the most painful ways possible. HE CAME BACK JUST FOR YOU. So that you can have joy now so that you can worship him now.

He has a plan for you and it starts with following Him. Use this song as a prayer, that He would take your worship of Him and transform it into following Him. It will not be easy and you may never see the impact you have on others. You have to trust that He is there and let Him fuel your decisions and become a light in the world, so that without you knowing you can start impacting people around you.

Take a look at Matthew 5:14-16 and pray that you may be the light or even just a spark of the light Jesus was.

                “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.

More Than Words - Extreme | Lyric Analysis

Last week I released a video on the song Shy Away and I talked about the idea that you can use something other than words to say I love you. To me this brings to mind the song More than Words by Extreme. So let’s take a look at that. Verse 1 Saying "I love you" Is not the words I want to hear from you It's not that I want you Not to say, but if you only knew How easy it would be to show me how you feel More than words is all you have to do to make it real Then you wouldn't have to say that you love me 'Cause I'd already know This verse does feel a little disconnected but overall the point is made. Why Think

I personally believe you should think about anything before you do it. If you find yourself doing it simply because someone told you to then that is not good enough. I also believe that you shouldn’t ask anyone to do anything without explaining why to them. You are free to do what you want but let’s look at some reason that singing should not be simply repeating other things. First, let’s define singing. Dictionary.com gives us the definition as a verb of to utter words or sounds in succession with musical modulations of the voice; vocalize melodically. I personally like the definition given in The Music Man where singing is simply defined as sustained talking. Are you held responsible for the words you say? Have you ever said something and then regretted it? If singing is simply talking then the same concepts apply. Words have meaning and consequences.
