Blinded With Sight
I have done a few different things with songs that have the word blind in the title. Most recently I did a blog post on the song She Blinded Me With Science. This prompted me to run a search on Bible Gateway for the word blind. This kicked back eighty-five results ranging from Genesis to Revelation.
I think the most common thing we think of when looking for
blind in the bible is the times Jesus healed blind men. We see numerous examples
but one can be found in Matthew 9:27-31
And as Jesus passed on from there, two blind men followed
him, crying aloud, “Have mercy on us, Son of David.” When he entered the house,
the blind men came to him, and Jesus said to them, “Do you believe that I am
able to do this?” They said to him, “Yes, Lord.” Then he touched their eyes,
saying, “According to your faith be it done to you.” And their eyes were
opened. And Jesus sternly warned them, “See that no one knows about it.” But
they went away and spread his fame through all that district.
Look at the parallels with that and Matthew 8:2-4
And behold, a leper came to him and knelt before him,
saying, “Lord, if you will, you can make me clean.” And Jesus stretched out his
hand and touched him, saying, “I will; be clean.” And immediately his leprosy
was cleansed. And Jesus said to him, “See that you say nothing to anyone, but
go, show yourself to the priest and offer the gift that Moses commanded, for a
proof to them.”
I truly believe that God uses everything for His glory and
sometimes that is deeper than we realize. An example of this is the Leprosy. Leprosy
is a highly contagious death sentence of a disease and it just vanishes with a
look from Jesus. I like to think he winks at someone with Leprosy and suddenly
they are healed. The deeper connection here is the parallels to sin. Sin
corrupts and eats away at the soul and no matter what you do you can never get
it to go away. Jesus has already said no more when He rose from the grave.
This has me thinking, in what way can blindness be like
this?
I have come to the conclusion that it is possible to be
blind and still see. We even leverage this to our advantage at times. We put
blinders on horses so they can only see what is in front of them and not get
distracted. We need to realize that we also have blinders, blinders caused by
sin. We can get so focused on one thing, one thing that we probably think is
what God wants from us that we become blind to His real plan.
