She Blinded Me With Science - Logic Analysis
Ever sense I did the video on Blinding Lights, I wanted to go back in time a little and take a look at the song She Blinded Me With Science.
She Blinded Me With Science was written by Thomas Dolby. It tells the story of a beautiful women and the effects she has had on the singer.
This song really only has a Chorus, a Verse, and a Bridge. The chorus however is changed ever so slightly every time it is sung. Look at them all next to each other
It's poetry in motion |
Mmm - but it's poetry
in motion |
Arguably there is also a chorus two that has some more direct changes
It's poetry in motion
And now she's making
love to me
The spheres're in
commotion
The elements in harmony
She blinded me with
science
"She blinded me
with science!"
And hit me with
technology
The two verses also have similar, minor differences:
When I'm dancing close
to her |
When she's dancing next
to me |
It is very interesting when contrasting with something like Blinding Lights that feels like there is no difference between the choruses.
That is not to say this is a masterpiece by any means. This is still insanely repetitive. When we start to break it down we look at the chorus and see that this really is just a song professing how attractive this women is. At the end of each verse however we see the negative effects of this addiction to her beauty. Sure, she is blinding you with science but because of that she is causing you to fail in biology and geometry.
The verses don’t have a lot going on at all, showing us that when dancing with this person you smell chemicals and hear machinery. This could be that you are smelling the natural chemicals released by the human body or the chemicals required to run a mechanical body that you are dancing with and hearing. I think however this is building on the idea that you are distracted from the things you need to be doing. You should be working on some chemistry thing or fixing a broken machine but all you can do is think about the beautiful women.
Let’s take a look at the bridge and final chorus:
“Good heavens Miss
Sakamoto - you're beautiful!”
I don't believe it!
There she goes again!
She's tidied up, and I
can't find anything!
All my tubes and wires
And careful notes
And antiquated notions
But! - it's poetry in
motion
And when she turned her
eyes to me
As deep as any ocean
As sweet as any harmony
Mmm - she blinded me
with science
“She blinded me with
science!”
She blinded me with
Here we see the age old problem of cleaning things. Even if you clean your area yourself you suddenly cannot find things that you have but away. This is multiplied when someone else cleans for you. What is interesting here is that next chorus starts with But! This shows us that it doesn’t matter this women is so beautiful that you don’t care about your life’s work because you are too busy lost in her eyes.
The science you are being blinded with is really just beauty and attraction not that she is explaining stuff at a higher level.
This song is plenty repetitive but with its minor changes it already forces you to Think Before You Sing.
