More Then Words

Music is more then just words. I understand that and I think songs can be enjoyed in a variety of different ways. I want to encourage people to think about the music they listen two and sing along with.

My question is then what if you find an instrumental version of a song? Should you try to find the lyrics to it and make sure you find it sound and agree with its message?

I do not know the answer on this one. I am listening to an instrumental version of an Album while writing this. I am aware there are lyrics that go with the songs, I have no idea what any of them are and I don’t really want to look at them. For me, I am scared that knowing the lyrics may make it not possible for me to enjoy the songs.

I over analyze lyrics, I know that I don’t need to get as deep as I do. A simple understanding of the message is enough to say alright I am okay with this or not. For background music I could even see an argument made for using the lyric version. Then I remember examples from my life where I noticed background music affecting me in a negative sense.

There are lots of opinions out there on the effect’s music has on you and several of them try to connect the effects with the style of music. For some people that might be the case. For me however I believe it connects directly with the lyrics. That is why I want to push you to think about the lyrics. To understand them. I want you to be able to explain why you like a song, specifically why you like the lyrics or to admit that the lyrics have issues, but I enjoy the rhythm or instrumentation or melody.

I do think music effects everyone differently. It is up to the individual to look at the examples they have and think about what makes differences in them. It is another step in the process to Think Before You Sing.
