Sun in my (dog's) eyes

In a recent Blog post I took a quick look at the song Yesterday’s Tomorrow, Today by Dream Quest. There is a lot more to be explored but what was interesting is I ended up quoting the song in a new way sense making the post.

My wife and I were sitting outside and we saw a man walking his dog. What stood out to me was that the dog was wearing sunglasses while the owner was not. It was clear that the dog did not like the sunglasses and when the dog succeeded in getting them removed the owner quickly scolded the dog and put the sunglasses back into place, this happened twice.

I was so confused by this. Why would he take such extreme steps to protect the dog’s eyes and not his own? I have not done any research on a condition that would cause this to be required for the dog, but to my wife and I it seemed like if it was super important then you would use a cone to prevent the dog from accessing the glasses.

What matters is that my wife could see how confused I was about this and so she said, “We could just go ask” naturally I responded No. She then urged “why not?”

To which I responded:
Big fish is me
In an ocean the size of a seed

She looked at me like I was crazy before recognizing the song.

The Idea here is that I want to be the big fish. In simplified terms I want to be in charge and in control. The best ways to do that is to make the ocean I am in as small as possible. I want to limit my interactions and keep unknown variables to a minimum. Here is that entire verse:
Big fish is me
In an ocean the size of a seed
Swimming the shallows of my piety
Sun in my eyes
I avert them to buy me some time
Longing for the deep
Safe in my pool, nothing new

This expands the idea farther. It states that there is knowledge of other truths that we ignore (Sun in my eyes). It expresses the desire for more but also feeling safe with the things that are known.

In the same way we are called out of our comfort zone to live for Christ and to share his news. Sometimes that means asking a stranger why their dog has sunglasses and just have a conversation and see where it goes. Throughout the bible God sent many people outside their comfort zone in a variety of ways. We need to be willing to take those opportunities when they arise.

Matthew 28:18-20
And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
