So Sorry For My Hidden Motivations
This week I released a YouTube video on the song So Sorry by Hangnail. And although the song doesn’t make any direct connection to Christ, that doesn’t mean there isn’t something we can learn from it and apply to our lives.
Let’s take a look at the second part of the first verse.
Who am I to decide the intent
And every motivation behind an event
I see through tainted vision
When I can't even read myself
Is this not something we do all the time? You have witnessed someone do or say something and without talking to them about it you “just know” why they did it. You might be right, but chances are you are at best partially correct because you don’t have all the knowledge of that person’s life events.
The second part is true as well. We take actions that we convince ourselves we did for some good reason, yet deep down we know we have other motivations that we don’t want to admit.
Matthew 7:3
Why do you see the speck that is in your brother's eye, but do not notice the
log that is in your own eye?
Let’s take a look at the chorus as well.
So sorry I'm the one waving scarlet
flags overhead
Declaring this unstable ground
So sorry I'm the one unafraid of breaking the news
So sorry I'm the only one
This can be seen as an apology for sharing how tainted our human vision is. Additionally, this can be seen as a call to action to motivate us to be willing to share the gospel. The idea here is that there are hidden motivations to others actions and sometimes those are hostile to our faith. We, however, must be unafraid of breaking the news.
People on earth can hate us all they want because we have the perfect love of Christ and the desire for them to know it, even if we are hated for it.
John 15:18
“If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you.
