The flood was a great thing.
I have been thinking a lot about the song Great Things since I posted the short video. If we look at the chorus we see the only real examples of His great works given by the song.
Oh, hero of Heaven, You conquer the grave
You free every captive and break every chain
Oh God, You have done great things
We dance in Your freedom, awake and alive
Oh Jesus, our Savior, Your name lifted high
Oh God, You have done great things
This is indeed the greatest thing that has been done but the song is called great things and a simple “You've been faithful through every storm” is not an example. Now, if I really wanted to go after this, then I would be making a video. Instead, I want to talk about some of the great things that could have been included.
If you stick with New Testament, you have plenty of options: walking on water, duplicating food to feed way more then it should have, miraculous healings, and many more.
For some reason though, I keep going back to the flood. I think this is because it parallels so much with stories that are told today. The world has become so corrupt that God has decided to remove all that ignore Him. Only one family is faithful and trusting enough to build a boat. And when it is done the amount of water that has to be on earth to cover everything is amazing on its own. Out of this one family the entire earth is populated and still growing.
It’s true, conquering the grave is still greater than all of that, but can you ignore all of that when talking about God’s great deeds?
Not only did God promise not to completely drown the earth
again, it hasn’t even come close. Look at what record flood levels are and then
compare them to Genesis 7:17-20
The flood continued forty days on the earth. The waters increased and bore up
the ark, and it rose high above the earth. The waters prevailed and increased
greatly on the earth, and the ark floated on the face of the waters. And the
waters prevailed so mightily on the earth that all the high mountains under the
whole heaven were covered. The waters prevailed above the mountains, covering
them fifteen cubits deep.
God has done many great things and is doing them now. He also knows your faults and I praise Him for the promise to not destroy the earth like that again, I’m not convinced I would be on the ark. I am convinced that God did the greatest thing and I will live with Him forever.
