Salty wounds
What if the issue is that the illustration should always fall flat?
We see and use the word wound so much that we start to use it for minor scratches and cuts. But biblically it is so much more than that.
Isaiah 53:5
But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities;
upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are
healed.
The wounds described there are the deadly kind.
The kind that are reserved for the worst of the worst, not some accidental cut on your hand. Not something to be taken lightly. A severe punishment meant for you and I.
Every little thing we do wrong is inflecting those wounds on Jesus. If those wounds were inflicted on us, they wouldn’t be sufficient to pay for our sin. Only eternal damnation could. But a divine being was able to take, not just enough for me, but enough for you and everyone else. He took on those wounds so we don’t have to.
The next time you complain about getting some hand sanitizer in that paper cut just remember there was a lot worse coming for you. But He took that penalty out of love, and a desire to be with you forever.
