What thoughts a bringging you down?

Image
Pure                 not mixed or adulterated with any other substance or material. How can that relate to us? One song titles Pure puts it like this , I bring the pure flow, like water around The rocks of life won't pull me down I bring the pure flow, drink so deep The river of life, my soul at ease I bring the pure flow, like water around The rocks of life won't pull me down I bring the pure flow, rising above the storms of life To live and love Here we see the idea that the singer brings with them the flow of water that protects them. They rise above the challenges of life in order to live and love. This sounds great but never feels obtainable. Lets take a look at verse one, This is my brand new day starting now I let go the things that weigh me down And rob me of the beauty that's to be found In life all around This is my prayer without ceasing the negative releasing And I rise above ...

If I Am Drowning Will You Push Me Farther Down

Image
I recently looked at a song that is surrounded by myths/theories about what it is referring to, see video here. One line that gets pulled on the most is the line about not helping someone that is drowning. Again see the full video to see how that might not be a literal sense. Here I want to turn toward a different song that does have some true drowning imagery. Wages Of Sin by Theocracy The image comes from a line in verse two: Death and devastation are the natural consequences of sin Enough for any man to bear, even without your thinly-veiled revenge You hand a glass of water to a man who's beginning to drown You reach out your hand like you care, but only push him further down But the payment is made The point of the verse is to ask why are we hindering people that are already struggling. The examples given are extreme, yes, but that gives you an opportunity to stop and reflect on them. This is especially the case when we know someone is down. Let’s say a friend of ...

And I will live like I believe

When you dive into song lyrics you can often be surprised, sometimes by how nonsensical they are and other times by their depth. Often we make the first judgment but as we continue to go deeper we realize just how wrong we were. If you look at the song Good to be Alive by Geoff Moore you can jump to some quick conclusions. The song starts simply recapping life, what it was like to be eight and imaginative. It shifts to dreaming in the teenage years and the chorus just fluffs around those ideas. And it's good to be alive To feel the wind in my face See the blue in the sky It's days like this I realize What a gift it is It's good to be alive Yes, this adds in the little idea of every day is a gift from God. And that is true and important but in this context, it is a direct reaction to a good day. Psalm 118:24 This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it. The song as a whole takes a slightly darker turn, discussing tragedy. Wel...

Citizenship in Heaven

Image
This week’s video was about the hymn “ I’m But A StrangerHere. ” That song as a whole can be summed up with Philippians 3:20 But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, One of the things that you have probably heard me repeat. Why does this matter? And often it’s unanswered. This has a clear answer and it would be surprising if you don’t know it. I think that is why it is often omitted. Clearly though, that doesn’t mean I like it being omitted. Romans 3:23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, Isaiah 59:2 but your iniquities have made a separation     between you and your God, and your sins have hidden his face from you     so that he does not hear. 1 John 1:8 If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. The forgiveness of Christ is unimportant without that reminder of your sin. Yes, we have joy in knowing this is not our home, but withou...
